What band shows up multiple times under "Favorite CCM Artist" on the staff page? The newsboys. Though it's been almost twenty years since the band originally formed, the newsboys continue to prove their relevance in the CCM market as they add more dates to their overwhelmingly successful GO Tour. Read more to find out why the GO Tour has been so critically acclaimed.
After hearing talk about how amazing the GO Tour was - I decided to drive four and a half hours to see what everyone was talking about. Now I know. After hearing talk about how amazing the GO Tour was - I decided to drive four and a half hours to see what everyone was talking about. Now I know. At the end of the intermission, the lights dimmed and "It Is You (Remix)" began to play, which signaled that it was time for the newsboys to take the stage. As everyone rushed back to their seats, the focus went back to the stage as drummer Duncan Phillip’s silhouette appeared on one of the giant screens, followed by silhouettes of keyboardist Jeff Frankenstein and guitarist Paul Colman. Lastly, lead singer Peter Furler’s shadow hopped onto the screen as he sang the chorus to "Go." The ‘boys hit the stage and opened with "Shine" complete with confetti cannons. As "Shine" ended, they flowed into "Wherever We Go," quickly getting the audience involved. "The Mission" soon followed along with the popular "Something Beautiful." A revamped version of "Blessed Be Your Name" got the audience into a worship mood. Furler then introduced a new song titled "Stay Strong" from their Greatest Hits album. The song is a slower rock song featuring the keys of Jeff Frankenstein. "Stay Strong" slowed the pace of the show, allowing fans to worship while swaying their lighters/cell phones in the air. The band’s old school set featured Jeff and Peter on a platform in the middle of the audience, performing classics such as "Not Ashamed," "Million Pieces," "Entertaining Angels," and then flowing back into the worship mood with "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" and "It Is You." As the band left the stage, Peter went into a touching speech about struggles. It's refreshing to know that everybody has struggles, no matter who they are or what they do. The newboys then ended their worship set with "He Reigns" before performing another new song, "I Fought the La," which the audience enjoyed. "I Fought the La" is an easy song to learn, lyrically, and the music is upbeat, allowing the audience to participate and really get into it. After "I Fought the La," Peter quickly introduced a revamped version of "Breakfast," which is always fun to hear live. The band then exited the stage and the audience erupted for an encore, which lead into "Your Love Is Better than Life." The song featured Furler doing a sort of break dance and then having a drummers duel with Phillips. They ended the night with the popular "I Am Free." This show proved that the newsboys still have what it takes - they still know how to rock the stage. It was refreshing to see them have fun and rock out with the audience. Paul Colman was one of the highlights of the evening. Whether it's his humor or his guitar solo's - he had a blast. Another highlight would be the dueling drums. After 12 years as a newsboys fan, I finally got to experience them live. From the risers rising, the drummers doing what they do best and Duncan spinning - it was an impressive night that I will never forget. newsboys Set List: 1) It Is You/Go 2) Shine 3) Wherever We Go 4) The Mission 5) Something Beautiful 6) Blessed Be Your Name7) Stay Strong 8) Old School(Not Ashamed, Million Pieces, Entertaining Angels, Turn your Eyes Upon Jesus, It Is You) 9) He Reigns 10)I Fought the La 11) Breakfast Encore: 12) Your Love Is Better Than Life 13) I Am Free To view tour dates, pictures, or to hear the two new songs, visit www.newsboys.com or www.myspace.com/newsboys .
