Sunday! marks Tree63’s first all new studio album since 2005’s worshipful I Stand For You. With Sunday!, Tree63 continues to improve upon the pop/rock style with catchy, upfront lyrics that has served as their signature sound since their debut album.

Get ready all you TGIFers. One listen of this CD will have you screaming TGIS! Thank God it’s Sunday, that is. The first single of the album starts off Tree63’s newest project as a parallel of Jesus’ crucifixion with our daily struggles. The slow riffs and drum beat intro of “Sunday” mirror somewhat of a death march, musically symbolizing the struggles we go through and the pain we felt watching Jesus on that cross for us. However, once the chorus hits your ears, the cymbals and Hallelujahs contrast the verses nicely, helping you get excited for the “Sunday”, when He is resurrected and we are redeemed. Don’t worry, that day is “not so far away.”

“Sunday” rolls right into the band’s shortest song to date. Short and to the point, “Becoming” brings the pop sound to the album and invites believers to stand up and start the movement! The sound and tempo make this the perfect song to play live.

One of my favorites from the album, “Foolishness”, is also the most thought provoking. The song spits out the most obvious questions that Christians never know the answer to: “What wisdom hangs a man up on a tree as the only way to end my misery? What kind of thinking made the way to heaven hard – a crooked journey down a straight and narrow path? How can I make sense of this?” Referring to Paul’s words of the somewhat upside-down kingdom, the lyrics let us know that it’s OK to understand our salvation as “foolishness.” My favorite lyric of the whole album lies in this song: “I reasoned myself to death, but I was saved by foolishness.”

Another personal favorite comes in at track eight. Written from God’s point of view, “Walking Home With You” is one of the most encouraging songs I have ever heard. As “God” explains everything He has ever given us, including a sun to light the day, written directions to His home, His precious blood spilled on the ground, He begs the question, “What more could you ever want from me?” The chorus is beautiful, as well. The high-pitched vocals varywonderfully with the low pitches of the verses, almost giving the words an extra meaning. In the hustle and bustle of the world around us, this song serves as a beautiful reminder that God is with us – He’ll wait when we fall, and until we’re in His arms, He’s walking us home.

Another call to move, “The Revolution” concludes the album with the same adrenaline you leave concert with. The repeating lines, “Another world is possible” and “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for” is a vision into the band’s last straw with idle believers. Lead singer John Ellis even admits that this song is just plain “Finger-pointing, accusatory, banner-waving, boat-rocking, galvanizing, fundamentalist-baiting, uncomfortable…rock ‘n roll!”

Having been in my CD player for over two weeks, Sunday! won’t be leaving any time soon. I hear a new lyric and a new way to look at a song every time it plays. Sunday! also includes the cliché-filled but encouraging “Alright” and the worship track “Almighty Silence”, both of which pull the album together nicely. This album is the perfect conversation starter, and if you are looking for a thought provoking album with a little time for worship, Sunday! is it.
