Michelle Tumes - Self Titled
It was five years well spent – these songs are fabulous! The musical style immediately reminded me of Enya, which is definitely a pleasant memory. The songs of Michelle Tumes have a gorgeous sound. They are at once energetic and ethereal, an exciting combination that she makes work perfectly. These songs are not only written and sung by Michelle, but also orchestrated and produced by her as well. She plays the piano and even conducts the orchestra. This is a musical master at work, the results of which are polished, professional and absolutely inspiring. This CD opens with a beautiful track, "Introit," which is defined as an opening song in a religious service and therefore, a fitting song to begin. A light and airy song sings of God being "the fire in winter and the light that shines on shades of gray." The vocals are delicate, and practically dance through the song. "Domine" is the second track, and my favorite on the CD. Deeper and more passionate than the first track, "Domine" is amazingly catchy. This sings of the saving power of our Father, found even when we have wandered from Him. "Domine, Domine, Make my path run straight. Lift my heart, speak my name, I fall, I break. Domine, Domine, Find me far away. Stay, take my pain, I am praying, Domine." Michelle's voice is like that of an imploring angel, simply beautiful. The instrumentation is also fantastic, accentuating the meaning of the song and complimenting Michelle's voice perfectly. This bright, energetic pop-orchestra song is the one I walk away singing. Once I hit the third track, "Let it Rain," I realized Michelle's lyrics were truly something special. Each song like a poem in and of itself, I began to appreciate the genius behind the beautiful, lilting voice. "Searching, above the sea of clouds you're all I see "Fair Weather" is a powerful, dramatic song in which the orchestration truly shines. In fact, the combination of electric guitar, drums and orchestra is most compelling. This is another song promising that God to be with us always. "In the silence when the fear calls and the tears pour you carry me home. You’re the windfall in the rainstorm. Stay with me. Never fair weather. You are never fair weather." This is a close second for my favorite. Light and gentle, "Far" and beautifully minor "Gypsy Heart" are both quieter songs, singing of lost days away from the Father and the journey back to Him. These are soft and simple, opening with a single voice and piano, violins singing in the background. "All that I long for is all that you give. All that I run to is there where you live." Enjoy the journey through these songs – they are wonderful. The pace picks up again with "Lovely Day" which brought my mind back to Enya and "Orinoco Flow." This is a delightful song, melodic and joyful. I cannot imagine anyone not feeling happy by the time this song ends. The problem with me calling any of these songs my favorite is that the next time through the CD I find more favorites. "Break Through" is one of those songs. Michelle's haunting and angelic voice sings a song of the Father's love, which is deeply moving and truly uplifting. "I See my love, see my love The final two tracks are soft and highlight Michelle's perfect voice. "Caelum Infinitum" is another song with beautifully poetic lyrics and a gently passionate, moving feel. "Hold On to Jesus" is a lovely song of our Savior, finishing the story of this amazing CD with the answer for all the peace and joy. "I've found love. I've found peace in my life. I've found joy that no one can describe. When I lay down to sleep there's a voice inside keeps telling me something that I ought to do. You've got to hold on to Jesus." This CD is a delight from every aspect. Musically, the masterful piano and the beautiful orchestral movements enhance every song. Michelle's voice is sensational, and her harmonies ever true and beautiful. However, at the heart of every song is a longing for God, from the journey towards Him to the peace and joy found in Him. This deeply inspiring CD would be a welcome addition to any music-lovers collection. |
