Spur58 - Sleepwalkers (2006)

Spur58 is a young, pop/rock band with a fantastic sound. Musically, their songs are very complex and exciting. Lyrically, the songs are so real they seem to take on their own life. Vocally, these songs are passionate and slightly edgy, which adds to their authentic feel. This melodic rock sound is reminiscent of The Afters, or Downhere, and a pure pleasure to experience.

Sleepwalkers is Spur58's newest CD, and the first on their new label, Indelible Creative Group. "Metaphorically, SPUR58 sees an outbreak of sleepwalking all over the country. We're sleepwalkers. We're going through the motions and we forget all the life around us," says front man Aaron Ivey. "If you're going to claim to know Jesus, you've got to wake up."

They take this message forward in both their music and their ministry to students. These songs are about awakening faith and making the choice to believe. While Spur58 has their sights on students, this is a relevant message for all ages. Wake up! Find your faith, make a commitment, and start living your life for Christ!

The CD opens with "Always Been There," a rich, full-sounding song of one who is out of options. "I have done all the right things for all the wrong reasons. I keep trying to find life in the places life's not found. There is no where else to go – there is no one else to run to." As the song progresses, the intensity increases, punctuated by a commanding drum that drives the song to its conclusion and the life-saving revelation, "You've always been there."

This is followed perfectly by the song "Starting to See," which highlights the dawning of understanding "You've been that something missing in me. I'm starting to see that you are beautiful and the kind of love I need. I know it's true that You have carried me and Your love has seen me through."

Continuing the progression, the third song is "Ready to Love." This is a great pop song that reminded me of Downhere. "I'm ready to love – I'm ready to give myself to you. I'm starting to fall, and it's you I've waited for." This is a song of one who is ready to make a commitment.

The title song, "Sleepwalkers," contains the essence of the Spur58 message. This is a powerful rock song, and absolutely wonderful. With heavy guitar, this is a call to consciousness. "Check your pulse and see if blood rushing through. There should be a beating heart attached to you. We are sleepwalkers alive but not in love. We've forgotten, we've abandoned what it means to have life. And the day waits your arrival, and the day is waiting for you to wake up, wake up and breathe."

Ivey's imploring and passionate vocals are punctuated by great guitar riffs.

I would call "The Wonderful" a worship song because of the words, but it would be better described as worship-rock because of the intensity of the music. "O Majesty, You are the Lord and we bow down." "We bow down and cry out to You of God – You are the Wonderful" This is a great song to our Creator with an intriguingly unique sound.

"Sustaining Me," is a song I truly enjoyed. With its powerful piano intro and great techno sounds, it is another song I would call worship-rock. "You sustain me. Your love keeps me. Everything I have is Yours alone. You surrounded me with mercy. Jesus you are sustaining me."

A true stand out is "Kyle's Lament," a dramatic, compelling song, and a definite favorite. Musically excellent and complex - vocally unrefined and edgy; this song embodies a unique combination that adds to its intensity. This is a story that begins in desperation, "Hope feels gone - I'm breathing slowly - tears are flowing – the pain is all too strong." This song exemplifies the Spur58 message found on their website, "The truth that God is great and good even in pain and suffering." Amidst the pain, Aaron's powerful voice soars above the band as he sings, "Still you remain. My hope lies in you." The talents of the band members truly shine during this song – it is fabulous.

"Start Over" is the perfect end to this CD. After the passion and the pain contained within the other tracks, this song flows with peace and the promise of a new beginning. Hypnotic piano and distant vocals repeat the saving message, "It is never too late to start over. No, it's never too late to come home." What a beautiful message to complete this collection. As the song swells in volume, it is hard to not close your eyes and be carried away by the promise – we can start over right now by giving ourselves to Christ.

If you haven't discovered Spur58 in the Christian music scene yet, I have to believe you will soon. Not only do they have a powerful message, their music is truly excellent. I hope to hear a few songs on the radio. Looking for a great, new Christian band? Try Spur58 Sleepwalkers – you won't be disappointed.
