If you are looking for an album with somewhat hidden messages in their lyrics, against a consistent sound throughout, Flatfoot 56's Knuckles Up is for you. Their re-release of this album on Flicker Records provides listeners with some very quirky stories and, unless you have a sheet of lyrics in front of you, you may not be able to understand a word they sing. "This Town" starts off the album, as many in the CCM industry do, encouraging listeners to rise up above others and begin a revolution. Flatfoot 56 proclaims that "with the help of His hand, we?ll unite" to turn the town around. The next track, "Brotherhood," keeps the same premise of not backing down, because someone is always at your side. Friendship, again, is the theme in track four, "Hold Fast." This song talks of all the things friends do and go through together, "but when it comes to praising God, we always bow our knee we go to Him, we sing out loud, it's Him that made us free." "Blood and Sweat" is one of the best songs on the album, dealing with those who have become complacent in their relationship with Christ. Writer Tobin Bawinkel supports the idea of the song by stating, "Christ is not an insurance plan, but a life choice." Other issues the band sings of include following the path of God instead of our own in "The Rotten Hand," being able to take fights standing tall in "Chi-Town Beat Down," and fans get an inside look at the name of the band with a playful look at a possible definition for Flatfoot 56 in "Breakin' the Law." The music doesn't change much throughout the whole of the album and lead singer Tobin Bawinkel doesn't calm his vocals down enough to be understandable. If you're into screaming vocals with a touch of Irish sound, pick up Flatfoot 56's newest release, Knuckles Up. |
