Dalton - Taste the Sky - 2006

New into the CCM world arrives brother-fronted band, DALTON. Originating from Texas, this band bursts onto the scene with their debut album, Taste the Sky. With a sound similar to The Afters, their lyrics set them far apart from any other band in the industry. Using a unique rock sound, their lyrics get the listener thinking about their current life, whether with or without Christ, and challenges them to get up and "taste the sky" and the goodness that a free life brings.

"City Lights" kick starts the album with a quick beat and a reminder that "everything's always about You." The chorus is upbeat gets your legs moving to the rhythm as it explains that Jesus changes the dark to day. DALTON also tries a little of Coldplay's famous piano tune from "Clocks," only, with a guitar.

One of the best lines from the album comes from the title track. The shortest song on the album, its power expressed through the music matches the strength of the line "Life without Your love is time that's already faded." DALTON helps us realize that the relationship we have with Jesus helps us all to shine and "taste the sky."

The sound of track three's chorus bears a striking resemblance to Casting Pearls' "You Alone." "Hold On" pleads with the listener that in times of doubt, weakness, and breakdowns, to hold on to the truth and light of Christ for the strength to carry on. The minimal use of the drums and slower pace of the song helps strike an emotional cord with listeners.

One of my favorite songs on the album is "Life Afraid." The lyrics are powerful; they get the listener to ponder the position they are at in their life, whether they are stagnant or searching for the impossible to find. Using a hypnotizing melody, DALTON advises us to not waste our time living afraid, explaining further that "Chances need for you to take them. They will make you, they will break you."

Other tracks include "600 ft.," a beautiful song on the sacrifice that Christ made and continues to make for us as everyday passes, "Hold Me Now," a worship song with a chorus in which I cannot help but be reminded of the infamous "boy bands" due to the sound, and "Streets," which gives a pleasant visual of the golden streets of heaven.

Taste the Sky is available on Selectric Records, the same label that brings us Cross Culture, Monday Morning, and Pivitplex. Pick up your copy of DALTON's debut CD and let it aid you in contemplating your position in life, whether you need to take a step back or race ahead to what Christ has waiting for you. Taste the Sky will not fail at churning the hearts of its listeners.
