Trial. Grace. Love. These words dance through the lyrics of Sanctus Real's newest and most exquisite album yet, The Face of Love. "I'm not alright, I'm broken inside, broken inside" echoes the first song's bridge. The guitar-driven song will attract by the music if not by the hopeful lyrics that all trials will bring us closer to God. The second track, "Eloquent", reminds us of God's unending grace with its witty and well written lyrics. The song is pack-full of similes about attitude. "I'm as eloquent as an elephant / as headstrong as the mighty King Kong / on a rampage throwing airplanes / I can't believe you haven't gone away." "Fly" empathizes with everyone struggling to free themselves with the burdens in their life and reminds us of God's patience with us during difficult times. The title track is a beautiful song, which softly explains that while we may not know the physical face of Jesus, we know Christ's face in our mind's eye because it is love. "You have been portrayed a thousand different ways / but my heart can see you better than my eyes / 'cause it's love that paints the portrait of your life." "Don't Give Up" pounds in with the pulsating music while the lyrics paint a picture of a person who has a crisis whenever love is involved and is trying to escape the pain it causes them. The song is a direct address to the stubborn, embittered heart of a person weathered by chasing depthless relationships. When it comes to the deprivation of man, Sanctus Real has a song that begs the listeners to stop kidding themselves because without God's grace nothing we do can ever be good. "There is nothing in our blood that makes the heart beat strong enough / apart from grace, apart from love / I believe in grace / I believe in love / I believe with love that we can do good." The lyrics are sung enthusiastically to a fast-paced rock song which will hook listeners and then reel them in. "Possibilities" sings to the dreamer in all of us who is too afraid to step out of our monotonous shell and accomplish our goals. "Where We Belong" is a prayer to be moved by God so that we can show his love to the failing world. The closing track is the most emotional. "Benjamin" is based very strongly on the experiences of the band as they rejoiced for the birth of a family member and the loss of another. The song gives hope that even while the circle of life may not always seem fair, God uses even the saddest occasions to strengthen us. Then, as a friend, it is stated, "We've been friends for a long, long time / so if you can't talk, just cry / and know that we will talk on the other side." Trial. Grace. Love. "He gives and he takes, and it makes us stronger." |
