New Way to be Human, Switchfoot's second musical release, is a long leap both musically and lyrically from their first release, The Legend of Chin. The music seems fuller and the lyrics more mature. It opens with the title track "New Way to be Human" which has a strong rock melody and diverse lyrics that challenge our feelings on our existence, a theme that runs through many of Switchfoot's melodies. The second big hit on the album is "Company Car," which addresses the idea of materialistic success not bringing happiness. The lyrics tell a story of someone who achieves their goals and ends up feeling as lonely as when he began. The lyrics on "Let That Be Enough" are nearly unbeatable when it comes to painting pictures in the mind. "And it all seems so helpless/and I have no plans/I'm a plane in the sunset/with nowhere to land" The music is beautiful and goes well with the lyrics. "Something More (Augustine's Confession)" is a charming song with wonderful, bouncy music that attracts the listener. The song's lyrics hit home with many people who are struggling with emptiness and end up on their knees begging God to come and be with them. Overall, this album is well composed both musically and lyrically and is both inspiring and comforting. This album is well worth the money you spend on it.
