Stemming from Hawaii, Olivia The Band has released two projects since their 2005 self titled debut, but as this review shows, their power pop/punk style has been resonating since their very first foray into the CCM scene.

In 2005, Olivia The Band hit the scene with their punk styled "self-titled" release Olivia The Band. Upon hearing about them I was kind of unsure how good a band with the name "Olivia" could be, but upon my first listen on the drive home from the Christian music store, I was rocking out in my car!

The first song of the project is the explosive "Stars & Stripes." The song itself is about never giving up because God is with you. The music is fast paced, but it's still enough to have you head banging by the end.

One of my favorite songs from the album is "Along the Way," a song which continues the quick paced punk style while adding meaning to the music with thought provoking lyrics. At times it feels like a song about a person and God, but at another glance the same could be said about a girlfriend. The song is fun nonetheless.

The next song on the album is "Heaven," which puts the undeniable spiritual message on what Olivia The Band really stands for. Heaven is a slower song in the beginning, but it picks up a little and becomes a rock track which asks the listener to look back on their faith and how it's made them stronger.

"Shut It Out," the fifth song on the album, is a rather fun track. It definitely has me thinking about the early days of Blink-182 or even Relient K. It's a fast paced song which keeps you rocking out the entire length. "Shut It Out" is a song about how a lot of times, we Christians would rather attempt to fix things on our own without God and only turn to him when we fail or are in need.

Up next, continuing to create energy and emotion is the song "39." "39" is a song about Jesus giving himself for our sins and thanking Him for keeping our best interests at heart. The song has a punk vibe similar to the band The Ataris. “Saturday” follows exactly where “39” left off. “Saturday” talks about Jesus dying for our sins and thanking God for giving us life.

As Olivia The Band goes on, the songs keep getting better and better musically and lyrically. They definitely have you thinking about your spiritual life while giving thanks to God for creating us, which seems to be a common message throughout the project. They're definitely a band worth following or keeping your eye on. Although there are a few songs that don’t seem to fit very well like the song "Butterflies," the good outweighs the bad in this project.

I recommend Olivia The Band for any fan of punk, Blink-182, The Atari's, Relient K, and Hawk Nelson.
