Roads To Rome

Recently on the Shoutfest tour with Building 429, Day of Fire and Superchic[k], Roads To Rome doesn?t show signs of slowing down any time soon. Basking in early radio success with their first single, "Alive In Me," the band will soon share the stage with Jeremy Camp and Todd Agnew for a show on July 16th in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Roads To Rome was formed in 2004 after Michael Musick and his wife moved to Nashville and began holding auditions for band members. Having met Kevin O?Neal (keyboardist) before the move, Musick was already familiar with his talents and knew that he wanted him to be part of the band. Teaming up with the other members came next. Musick states, "We found Seth Marcum (bassist) while he was still living in South Dakota. David Burch (drummer) has been with us a long time and has done a great job since he joined the band after having a very successful run with several solo artists." On how the guys blend their musical talents, Musick says, "All of us play on worship teams at churches around town and I think that experience bleeds over to our attitudes about where music fits in our Christian Walk."

Their debut album, Love Rain Down, which Musick says took nine months to complete, is filled with smooth vocals, catchy chords and tunes that flow seamlessly from one song to the next. "We started testing songs and arranging them for several months." States Musick, "I would guess that we had close to 20 songs that we wanted to include on the album." How do they pick those lucky ten, you might ask? "One of the most important things in selecting songs is deciding if the song is mature enough. Some songs are good ideas that just need more time to develop." Adds Musick, "The other factor is compatibility and order - which songs go well together and what is the best order to place those songs. "

When asked about the title track off the album, Musick states, "?Love Rain Down? is a song about exasperation, desperation, unconditional love, healing, and inclusion. The person singing the song has reached the end of his ability to cope. He finds himself crying out to his Creator for a fresh rain of mercy and grace to fall not only on himself but also on all who are in need of a touch from the Spirit. Musically, this song is a mix of Rock, Jazz, and Gospel. This is intentionally diverse and represents the hope that God?s love would rain down on all those who are thirsty."

Another song that stands out on the album is, "Long Road to Memphis." Musick?s clean vocals, along with the simple yet powerful piano leave a definite impact on the listener. The song is about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Musick says what he admires most is "Dr. King?s approach to civil rights was the tremendous success he had in pushing the important justice issues in a non-violent way." He goes on to say, "I think that?s what made his movement so powerful. I wanted to write this song now because we still have a long way to go in providing justice to the oppressed. Dr. King got us going down the right road but now it is our responsibility to finish the work. It?s a long road, but with God?s help, we will overcome."

Love Rain Down shows surprising maturity from a band that obviously doesn?t know that they?re meant to be "up and coming." Keep that one under wraps because whatever they?re doing is working.
