Being a teen can be hard. Just ask Krystal Meyers. On top of the normal pressures that come with life as a teenager, she also juggles her thriving career as a musician/songwriter. Touring with bands like Kutless, Hawk Nelson & tobyMac, she has made quite a name for herself in the US. To top it all off she is now taking on Japan with mainstream exposure. ccmBuzz recently had the chance to chat with Krystal about recent tours, her upcoming release and much more.

ccmBuzz: For someone who has never heard your music, which single song would you want them to listen to first to give them the best idea about your sound/style? Which song on your latest album do you think best defines you and why?

Krystal: I would probably say, listen to "Anticonformity" to hear what I’m about, as that is my platform. The style is also the pop rock with an edge kind of feel that I strive for. "Fire" might also be a better one from a music stand point.

ccmBuzz: How has the Winter Jam tour been going? What’s it like sharing the stage with artists like tobyMac and newsboys?

Krystal: I listened to their music when I was in elementary and middle school and so it's really cool to share the stage with music icons I loved as a kid. They both have excellent shows. Toby has by far the best show out there. There’s also a huge pull from both of them and so the crowds have been insane, anywhere from 8,000 to 10,000 which has been incredible.

ccmBuzz: Which song of yours do you think the crowd responds to the most?

Krystal: I don’t know if there’s one specific song. They seem to respond well to all of them! Three out of four of the songs are singles so people know those songs and get really excited about them. One that we perform is a new song from my album that’s coming out in August. We bring out John from Hawk Nelson to play second guitar on it since I don’t play on that song. The crowd loves hearing something new and seeing one of the Hawk boys. We also have a lot of crowd participation in all the songs so everyone has a good time.

ccmBuzz: Which song is the most fun for you to play live?

Krystal: "Fire and The Situation," which is our new song. "Can’t Stay" is another one that’s really awesome to play live.

ccmBuzz: Any funny/interesting tour stories?

Krystal: On the Kutless Strong Tower Tour my bass player Brandon did a fake proposal to our tour manager Melanie when he called her on stage as an end of tour prank. The funny thing is that they most definitely are not dating and never would; yet the crowd didn’t know that. So when we were signing afterwards, everyone was coming up and congratulating them and saying how great marriage was! She was humiliated but it was awesome at the same time.

[Laughter]

ccmBuzz: How do you balance schoolwork with being on the road so much?

Krystal:  When I’m off the road for a couple of days I do my home school in the morning for as long as I can. But of course I just graduated high school, so I don’t have to deal with school anymore! [Laughter]

ccmBuzz: You mention in your bio about how you can reach teens on their level because you are a teen yourself. But being an artist/musician (touring, opening for bands like tobyMac, newsboys, Hawk Nelson, Kutless) you’re not exactly living the life of a "normal" teen - are you ever confronted with that problem and how do you convince kids that you are, in spite of being in the limelight, just a "normal" teen?

Krystal: Well to tell you the truth, I’m not confronted with that. Unless you are tobyMac or newsboys, Christian artists don’t have that major of a celebrity status when it comes to being off the road. I am a normal teen. I was in public school all the way up until 10th grade. I face pressures all the time just like any other teen and maybe even more so because I am in the "lime light" and because people expect so much of me. I have a boyfriend. I live at home and deal with family and have spats with my parents and brother like a normal teen would. I go to the mall and movies and just hang out - when I’m home. The only difference is that I travel the world and make music. But that doesn’t stop me from being a teenager, even though sometimes I have to make adult decisions.

ccmBuzz: Does anyone from your family travel with you?

Krystal: No not really. My dad does drive the tour bus sometimes. He was our road manager for us when me and my band were on Shout Fest, but that was before our current road manager, Melanie. But I consider my band and Mel to be my family - 3 picky older brothers and a watchful mother! [Laughter]

ccmBuzz: What can you tell us about the new album you’ve working on? How does it differ from your first album?

Krystal: The new record is unnamed and the only thing I know about the release is that it will hit stores in August. As for the record itself, it’s a lot more diverse than the first record. The rock moments are a lot harder than the first record, where as there are moments that were inspired by "Spoken" and "Underoath." And then there are some piano inspired moments that are pretty. There wasn’t really any piano on the first record. This record also has some very to the point issues that are touched on, like the tough heavy song that talks about premarital sex from a girls stand point and from a guys stand point. Most definitely a song that doesn’t beat around the bush or sugar coat the issue. Plus I’m older and I’ve matured since the first record. So the issues and sound will be matured.

ccmBuzz: I read that you and your band will be in Japan at the end of March. What can you tell us about that? Ever been to Japan?

Krystal: I’m really excited about that trip. Never been to Japan. What I can tell you is that I’m being taken mainstream over there and so ill be doing Japan’s MTV and VH1 and the mainstream radio and appearances. I’m really excited because it will be a huge ministry opportunity!!! I’m going to be doing another photo shoot over there and doing shows. It’ll all be promotion for the release of my record, mainstream in Japan.

ccmBuzz: Well, that’s about all I have for now. Thanks so much for chatting with me today. Good luck with the rest of the tour and the new album. Hope you have an awesome time in Japan too!

Krystal: Thank you so much! It’s been awesome!
